Theater, like many careers, relies on community. To get started, focus on networking, volunteering, and student teaching. Casting a wider net increases your chances, so don't limit yourself to a small area.

Reaching your goal will be a journey. Build relationships, gain experience, and create a strong resume for your desired job. Research the jobs you want and check their hiring criteria and qualifications.

Good luck!

Theater education can lead to a variety of meaningful opportunities, especially if you’re open to different types of institutions. After college, you can look for roles in public schools, private schools, and charter schools, as well as teaching or instructional roles at the university level. Also depending on where you end up living there could be arts related nonprofits that need theater/drama teachers. Each setting offers something a little different in terms of resources, student populations, and focus, which gives you flexibility as you start your career.

Beyond where you teach, building experience while you’re in college will be key. Getting involved in productions, student teaching, internships, or assistant roles helps you develop both your teaching skills and your artistic voice, and it makes you a stronger candidate when you begin applying for jobs. Theater teachers are valued for their ability to build community, creativity, and confidence in students, and those skills are in demand. With a solid educational foundation and hands-on experience, you’ll be well positioned to find a role that’s both fulfilling and aligned with your passion for theater.

Networking and Community! There are many opportunities in the community to be a part of even after graduating high school. Find a local theater group and learn as much as you can. Volunteer your time and connect with the cast and directors. Find courses in college that promote your growth in the area of theater. Put yourself out there and the future will be promising. If your community has numerous theater production companies, try to get involved with different ones (small and large roles too). Also, find workshops that can encourage growth in the various theater areas (in other towns/states). Good Luck in your search for your passion!
