How do I know I am making the right decision in which college to attend?

I am currently a high school senior mainly looking at colleges that are out of state. I don’t know if I’m making the right decision financially by wanting to leave the state or if it’s a good idea to get out in the world more.

Hello, Angelina !

I am happy to give you some advice about this because I went to college out of state. Right away, I want to encourage you to follow through with your plans because part of being a college student is indeed going out in the world,, as you've wondered, and you'll see that for yourself especially attending out of state. You will be experiencing real world issues and meeting a variety of new people which can be a really good experience.

To get the clear initial picture about the college, first go to their website and read every section and read your major program's content, too. Next, go to You Tube to see if that particular college has a You Tube Channel (many colleges do) and watch videos of the college and campus. Your next step would be to arrange to attend an orientation and tour the campus. That would be the final touch to figuring out if it's the right college for you.

It isn't too bad going to college out of state. Once you live in the college's state for 12 months, thereafter you will be considered a resident and would be paying in-state level of tuition. I took a semester break at first and fulfilled my residency in my new state after my first semester which I paid tuition for. I took only 4 courses to keep the expense down. It worked out well for me. Starting my second semester, I was then a resident and didn't have to pay out of state level tuition.

Duluth is pretty cool, but for me, I wanted to leave my small town as there wasn't much in the way of opportunity for a young person at that time, many decades ago. So think about why you want to relocate. It can be important. You can always go back to Duluth on semester breaks and during the summer.

Apply for Federal Student Financial Aid. Remember that there are also scholarships that you can be looking into right now. Look into it now because there are scholarships for Minnesota high school seniors planning to attend college out of state, and eligibility often depends on specific criteria such as intended field of study, heritage, or academic achievement. Look online for more information about The Joyce Ivy Summer Scholars Scholarship, The Latino Scholarship Fund, The Minnesota Indian Scholarship, The Association of the United States Navy, and scholarships offered by the college you will attend. There are also general scholarships and when you meet your residency requirements, you can then apply for that state's scholarships. Return here if you need more detailed help with this and mention which state or college you'd be attending.

Discuss your decision with your parents and get an idea of how much support will come from them. They can be a huge help with this.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best ! Remember - attending college is one of the best ways to step out into the world !
