What classes really matter?
A lot of people talk about how some classes are redundant or just busy work to graduate. But for those who have already graduated what classes would you recommend almost everyone take, or since I want to be a mechanical engineer, what classes would you at least recommend for me to take?

The classes you need to take depend on the level of education you are pursuing, the school. your major, and likely other factors. I will assume you are asking about an undergraduate degree. Most degree programs break down into at least three main categories: core curriculum, electives, and courses specifically related to your major field of study. Usually, you work with an academic advisor to identify what courses you should take to achieve your goals, but there are many options in each of these areas. The core curriculum covers fundamental courses that all students are expected to take. These usually cover a wide range of subject areas to ensure that you have a well-rounded basic education. You usually have flexibility in the individual courses, but the topline subject areas are required, e.g. math, hard sciences, social sciences, language arts, etc. Electives can be as easy or challenging as you make them, but it's usually best to ensure they are related to areas of interest for you or that will benefit you personally, academically, or professionally. Selection of courses in your major field of study should be aligned to your future goals, i.e. the specific businesses you hope to work in, or prerequisites for an advanced degree. There is no set formula for making these selections, but general guidance is to work with your academic advisor and to ensure that your selections are made thoughtfully and purposefully. Good luck in your studies.
