Hi Huda,
Participating in Science Fairs is a fantastic opportunity to develop research skills and possibly qualify for scholarships when you go to university.
What wows the judges very much depends on your age group. Obviously, when you are in 4th grade, the expectations are very different than when you are in 11th grade. Most winners participate for a number of years and get better from year to year.
If you are on the younger side, i.e. middle school, coming up with your own project and doing something that can be done at home or at your school is a great way to learn about identifying a "problem" to work on and developing a scientific project from it. It's a great way to hone your observational skills and your creativity.
Most state and international winners in the upper age categories work with mentors at universities, so you may want to look out for information sessions and make some contacts.
The category of your research project can also make a big difference! Biology or engineering are great categories that cover a wide range of topics. There will also be a lot of competition which makes it hard to win anything. Some categories, like space science, on the other hand have very few entries, and it's much easier to win a category!
I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Hi Huda, that's a great question! Even though I haven't judged science fairs recently, I've seen that winners often have projects with practical uses, like tackling microplastics or finding ways to detect cancer early. I hope this inspires you and gives you some great ideas!
