Hi Wyatt,
Since you didn't mention how old you are , I am going to assume that you are still in school. If you want to become a tattoo artist, take all the art classes that you can get. If there are any art clubs, join those. Practice drawing in your free time. Read up on art history, different art styles and popular tattoo styles and practice those.
If you plan on going to college, an art degree would be a good choice. Training as a tattoo artist is usually through an apprenticeship with a licensed tattoo artist (1-3 years). There are also tattoo schools and courses. I would recommend to look up established studios in your area and talk to some people in the business.
Requirements for licensure vary by state and sometimes by county. Some states require proof of training and an exam. Typically, you need at least a health and sanitation certificate. Annual training on bloodborne pathogens might be required as well as proof of hepatitis vaccination. Check with the Department of Public Health in your county what the local requirements are.
I hope this helps! All the best to you!
