Paul’s Answer

Hi Layla,

Depending on what your wanting to major in has a lot to do with college selection. If drumming, I would suggest looking into Berklee or North Texas state.

Me, my background started in the school of hard knocks. I dropped out college. I’ve been playing professionally since I was 13 & I’m in my late 40’s now. I currently work for country music legend Doug Stone. But, today colleges are usually more flexible with class loads. So “stick with it “ & get your college degree.

If your a working musician currently, I would suggest a junior college & kind map out your courses & take courses that don’t interfere with your gigs. Also, you may want to lighten you load by limiting the number of classes you take per semester. I hope I have shed some light on your question.

Good luck.

Paul recommends the following next steps:

Pick a college that has a great music program. Perhaps a junior college.
Maybe limit the number of classes you take per semester, if your currently working as a musician.
Learn to balance your load. It’ll help you out in life later.

Chris’s Answer

There are definitely a lot of colleges for music, from highly regarded Juilliard (you have to be extremely gifted), as well as music departments in local colleges.

I believe most programs will be more suited towards instruments such as piano, cello, etc. If you really love music definitely take the opportunity to explore other instruments. Also, the probability to make a stable living from music is not very high, so always have a backup plan and try to find something else in addition to music that you are interested in to fall back on, for example software engineering. There is a high correlation between musical ability and success in math/science fields. Good luck!
