You can become a welder a few different ways, but the most common path is to start with basic training through a trade school or community college, where you’ll learn the main welding techniques and safety skills. Another great option is to reach out directly to local welding or fabrication shops and ask if they take on apprentices or helpers — many places will train you on the job if you show interest and a good work ethic. My father actually did this years ago when he wanted extra income, and the shop taught him everything he needed to know. Today he has his own welding setup at home and does jobs for himself and others on the side.
Once you get some experience, you can choose to get certified through the American Welding Society (AWS), which can help you qualify for higher‑paying welding jobs. Welding is one of those trades where your skills grow with practice, and the more you learn, the more opportunities you’ll have.
