Hello Vasanthi,

It’s great that you ae interested in Java backend development!

A good place to start is learning the basics of programming with Java. Things like variables, loops, object-oriented programming, and data structures. After that, focus on backend tools such as databases (SQL), web frameworks like Spring Boot, and understanding how APIs work.

Try building small projects along the way, like a simple REST API or a basic web service, because hands-on practice helps a lot.

There are many good beginner courses on platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and YouTube. Don’t worry about learning everything at once, take it step by step and keep practicing.

Which tutorial to pick is not the most important part, they all pretty much say the same. It's HOW you follow it.
This is one is a solid option, https://www.w3schools.com/java/default.asp.

You said you want to learn from scratch, so start with using a plain text editor and compile / run using command line. Avoid using IDEs with auto-complete, AI suggestions, etc. Always have the official Javadoc open, so you can check the correct spelling for each class, method, etc. That's how you will truly "learn the basics".

Regarding topics: Start with the basics (language structure, types, objects, program flow, execution, debugging, etc) and once you understand them move onto more complex ones.

Last, build something! And do NOT ask AI to write it for you.

Good luck!

To become a Java Backend Developer from scratch in 2026, you should focus on a path that moves from foundational programming to enterprise-grade frameworks. Start with Core Java, specifically mastering Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) principles like classes, inheritance, and polymorphism, as well as the Collections Framework and Exception Handling. Once the basics are solid, learn SQL for relational databases (like PostgreSQL or MySQL) and Maven or Gradle for managing project dependencies. The industry standard for backend development is the Spring ecosystem; you must eventually master Spring Boot for building microservices, Spring Data JPA for database communication, and Spring Security for authentication and authorization.

For high-quality resources, the University of Helsinki's Java MOOC is widely considered the best free, exercise-heavy starting point for learning Core Java from absolute scratch. As you progress, Roadmap.sh provides a comprehensive visual guide to every topic you need to cover to be job-ready in 2026. For professional-grade Spring Boot training, the Official Spring Academy offers structured paths, and platforms like freeCodeCamp provide full-length video tutorials on YouTube for building real-world projects. To prove your skills, aim to build and deploy at least one complex project, such as a Task Management System or an E-commerce API, and host your code on GitHub to build a credible portfolio.

Start by learning Java basics. Focus on variables, data types, control flow, methods, and object-oriented ideas like classes, inheritance, encapsulation, and polymorphism. Then, dive into important topics like collections, generics, exception handling, file handling, multithreading, design patterns, and SOLID principles. You can use resources like freeCodeCamp, Pluralsight, Oracle documentation, and tutorial sites such as W3Schools, TutorialsPoint, Tpoint Tech, and CoddyTech.

Next, explore databases and web basics. Learn SQL and relational databases like MySQL or PostgreSQL, and how Java connects using JDBC and ORM tools like Hibernate. Understand web basics such as HTTP, REST APIs, and JSON. Practice coding on platforms like HackerRank, LeetCode, and CodeSignal. Start with simple CRUD applications and slowly work on more complex projects.

Finally, focus on backend frameworks and advanced skills. Get comfortable with Spring Boot and the Spring Framework, Git, GitHub, Maven/Gradle, and testing with JUnit and Mockito. Build projects, upload them to GitHub, and share them on LinkedIn. Look for experience through volunteering, internships, or virtual internships on Forage. Advanced topics include Spring Security, authentication, authorization, Docker, cloud deployment, CI/CD pipelines, microservices, caching, and message queues like Kafka or RabbitMQ. By following this path step by step, you'll be ready to succeed as a Java backend developer.
