I'm a student preparing to apply to vet school soon and I've heard a lot of people have been getting rejected. What should I keep in mind when applying?

Each year, about two-thirds of applicants to U.S. veterinary colleges are not accepted due to limited seats and high competition. Schools look at various factors like college grades, extracurricular activities, and written responses to understand who you are, your knowledge of the veterinary field, and your personal traits like resilience and honesty. They also consider your goals and how you've prepared to reach them. Reference letters are also important in the evaluation process.
At the veterinary school where I work, we received over 3,000 applications this year. From these, we interviewed about 400 candidates and offered admission to 120. Many applicants apply to multiple schools, so even if some are turned away, they may still get into another college.
To improve your chances, aim for over 400 hours of veterinary or animal experience, maintain a GPA above 3.5, write a strong application with help from others, and secure excellent reference letters. Although it's challenging, over 4,000 students enter veterinary school each year out of more than 12,000 applicants.
Your best chance might be at your home-state school, but many schools also accept out-of-state applicants. Check out the AAVMC website to learn about different schools and their application requirements.
Veterinary medicine is a great career with many job opportunities. I started veterinary school about 45 years ago and have been teaching for over 36 years. Good luck!
