What kind of electives should I take as a Freshman?
I am a rising Freshman and we just received our course request forms I am unsure if I should keep the elective list I have which is AP Psych, Emergency planning 2, and 7th period Softball. I don't know if I should take the second Emergency planning class or something that is going to get me more ahead Academically.
Also, I cant decide if I should take World history honors or AP but the AP teacher at my school doesn't teach the content that's on the exam and it's a lot of studying outside of class which is hard for me since I'm a student athlete What should I do ??
Hey Emery, as someone who balanced academics and athletics throughout school, here's my honest take. AP Psych is a great pick since it challenges you and shows colleges you're pushing yourself, so keep that. For the Emergency Planning 2 vs. something more academic debate, I'd lean toward swapping it for a class that gets you ahead academically because from my own experience, loading up on strong foundational classes early on paid off big time later when I was earning honors and scholarships for graduate school. As for World History, be real with yourself about your bandwidth as a student athlete; if the AP teacher isn't even teaching the exam content and you'd have to self-study on top of softball, Honors is the smarter move because a strong A in Honors looks better than a stressed-out B or C in AP, and your GPA will thank you. The key is picking the path where you can genuinely do well and not burn out, because consistency in your grades over four years matters way more than one AP class freshman year. Keep softball, keep AP Psych, swap in something academically useful, and go Honors for World History so you can actually enjoy your freshman year while still setting yourself up strong! I hope this helps!
