If you're aiming for a BS in Interior Design in the Philippines, choosing the STEM strand for grades 11 and 12 is often a smart and practical move. Interior design involves technical drawing, space planning, and understanding materials and lighting, which are all grounded in math and physics. STEM provides a strong foundation in these areas, making college studies easier and giving you an advantage. Many students from STEM successfully enter interior design programs, and universities often view this background positively because it develops the analytical skills needed to turn creative ideas into functional spaces.

On the other hand, HUMSS focuses more on communication, literature, and social sciences, which can help with the artistic and client-focused aspects of interior design. If you enjoy creative expression and prefer less math-heavy subjects, HUMSS might feel more aligned with your current interests. However, it may not directly prepare you for the technical demands of the degree, and you might need to catch up on certain prerequisites later.

Choosing between practicality and passion is a common dilemma, and many people experience it. Leaning toward STEM is advisable for its practicality, as the skills you gain are transferable and keep more options open if your interests change. You can still pursue your passion through electives, personal projects, and art clubs. Interior design is a mix of creativity and technical skills, so building a strong technical base early on is beneficial.

In the end, talk to your school guidance counselor or check the specific admission requirements of the universities you are considering. Most accept students from any academic strand as long as you meet the overall grades and any portfolio or entrance test requirements. Whatever you choose, keep practicing your drawing and design skills outside of class, as your personal portfolio will be very important when applying for the degree.

Choose STEM.
It aligns better with Interior Design requirements and gives you more career opportunities in the future, while you can still pursue your creative passion alongside it.
