If I cannot afford college and do not receive scholarships, should I just take out loans If not, what else can I do to pay and attend college? What other tips would be given to raise or gain money to help pay for college??

I am a high school senior from Winooski, Vermont. I plan to major in anthropology. Unfortunately, I have not received much aid because my parents make a decent amount of money, but they will not be helping pay for college and I do not make enough money to cover my cost alone.

There are many scholarships that aren't given out each year. Reach out to your college, professors, deans, or department offices to learn about available funding. You can call them, send a handwritten note, or even visit in person if you can.

From my experience in college, I did not get enough scholarships to pay for it in high school (though I did get some). I took out student loans to cover the difference, then I got jobs during college to help pay them off. I started as a janitor at my university, but then I was able to become an undergraduate teaching assistant and then a research assistant in my department (so two jobs, but relevant to my career), and those helped me pay down the loans as well. Then, because I had that experience and was a good student, I secured multiple scholarships during my undergrad, and I ended up graduating debt free. Overall, key takeaway is always be applying for new scholarship opportunities, and introduce yourself to all of your professors so you can get work opportunities within your field of study that position you well for internships/scholarships.

I suggest filing your taxes separately. This will qualify you for grants in most cases.
Thank you comment icon Each state is different and federal pell grants are different too. But if you get a part time job and file your income separately from your parents, they must also not claim you as a dependent, your income will be what is determined if you qualify. Also living in the same state or county (community college) also will likely reduce the cost of school (out of state fees). You will likely want to take to a financial aid professional for more details for your specific situation. TRAVIS UPCHURCH
