I am a current college freshman. My goal is to land an internship for next summer in cybersecurity. How do you introduce yourself or talk to prospective employers at a career fair?

Hello Carolyn,

This is a great question, especially when preparing for career fairs and internship interviews in cybersecurity. Showing passion in an interview is not about speaking too much — it’s about being prepared, calm, and clear about what you want to say or pass to the other person.

For me one thing that really helps is organizing your thoughts before the interview.
I write down bullet points in the order that I want to present myself.

For example:

- Brief introduction (your name, major, and interest in cybersecurity);
- A short background about your studies and what you are learning;
- Your interests or hobbies related to technology or problem-solving;
- Your career goals and what you want to learn in the internship;
- Why you chose that company;
- How you believe you can contribute to their team.

When you put this on paper and practice, you become more confident and calm.
The more you rehearse about the companie, the more natural and passionate you will sound.

At career fairs, passion is usually shown through preparation, eye contact, a calm voice, and genuine interest in the company. Employers can easily notice when a student has taken time to understand their work and is truly interested in learning.

So prepare your key points, practice speaking slowly and clearly, and focus on showing curiosity and motivation.
Confidence comes with preparation.

Warm greetings from Brazil! 🇧🇷

Annette’s Answer

Hi Carolyn! I always tell my students, clients, and friends that passion comes through when you can clearly articulate your value. Before you walk into that room, ask yourself if you can answer these three things:

This is who I am.

This is what I can do.

This is why you need to hire me.

Know the Role Inside Out

Review the job description carefully. Are you proficient in certain areas and perhaps intermediate in others? Be honest about your skill levels. For example, if you're going into Cyber Security, be ready to explain exactly why that field excites you.

Embrace Your Story
Know your strengths—and your weaknesses—and don’t be afraid to discuss them. Authenticity is a form of passion.

Master the STAR Method
I highly suggest practicing a few STAR answers (Situation, Task, Action, Result). This helps you tell a story that proves your passion through real-world results!

Best Regards
