Farhan’s Answer

AI is already great at tasks like scheduling appointments, sending reminders, verifying insurance, answering common patient questions, processing referrals, and supporting billing and coding.

However, AI can't fully replace the human touch needed in healthcare. Patients often need empathy and human judgment, especially when they are anxious or in pain. Unusual situations require complex problem-solving that goes beyond standard scripts. Trust and sensitivity are important when handling private health information, and physical tasks like checking in patients and managing the waiting room need human presence. Plus, medical settings have legal and ethical responsibilities that require accountability.

Instead of replacing humans, AI is likely to enhance their roles by automating repetitive tasks. This allows receptionists to spend more time on meaningful interactions with patients. Some practices might reduce staff, but the role of receptionists isn't going away anytime soon.

If I were you, I would learn to use AI effectively to boost productivity. It could give you a significant advantage!

Martha D.’s Answer

Hi, Taheem - yours is an excellent question, and Farhan has given excellent feedback. A few more thoughts:
- Remember that medical receptionists work in multiple settings, such as doctor's offices, medical testing, hospital intake, and emergency services. Farhan's points about the human touch and judgement are especially important in hospitals and emergency rooms so maybe focus your job search there. In my area, larger medical testing companies began moving away from in-person reception before AI.
- What you do as a new medical receptionist is likely more vulnerable to AI. As you gain experience, however, you will be able to move into roles with more authority and judgement. This will make you less vulnerable to AI.
- There are multiple roles outside of medical reception you could move into - see Resume Worded link below.
