What are some ways I can make my essays stand out from the rest when applying for scholarships. ?

I am a high school senior that wants to pursue a career in criminal investigation with a main focus of homicides. I play basketball and plan to play in college also.

Colleges want to learn what makes you unique, so when you’re responding to an essay prompt, think about experiences, interests, or perspectives that set you apart from others. Maybe you have a unique hobby, have worked on a meaningful project, or have had a memorable travel experience. Those personal details can help your essay stand out. For example, for one of my essay prompts I wrote about how I enjoy playing foosball.

It’s also important to be intentional with your wording. Use language that reflects your emotions and passion, because that is often what stays with the reader most.

I remember hearing a story from an admissions counselor who said one of the most memorable essays she ever read was about someone’s excitement over getting a Bojangles chicken biscuit for the first time. What made it stand out was how vividly the writer described their feelings and why that experience meant so much to them. It was a great reminder that even a simple topic can become a strong essay if it is written with personality and genuine emotion.

It is great to start with the audience in mind and do some research so that the response is tailored to the school and sholarship. What do they care about? What is important to them. Based on that find a topic/statement/a relevant personal experience that grabs attention. For example, instead of "I want to be a criminal investigator," try painting a picture of the exact moment you became fascinated with justice and problem-solving. Bring in personal experiences/stories on how what you enjoy has shaped you. E.g. basketball shaped your discipline, teamwork, and ability to perform under pressure. All critical skills in criminal investigation. Close by painting a picture of your future impact, not just "I want a degree," but what you'll do with it. Something like graduating, joining a department, and giving closure to families is far more memorable.
If you can access to an AI tool. use it to assist you create a structured and personal story. This requires multiple prompts to get to the level of specificity to actually be personal and specific. Don't just accept the first response it gives you. ask it at least 5-10 follow on questions and pieces of information to make the content most personal.

It's great that you're thinking about this. Scholarships can be very competitive but are so worthwhile to pursue. In addition to highlighting your experience and successes, it's important to also consider the organization's values and interests. Let your application show how your interests and activities match their mission, and how your work matches their unique priorities whether it's community leadership, local commerce, youth in sports, etc.
