What are some major factors that contribute to the nationwide shortage of Speech Language Pathologist and Speech Language Pathologist Assistant's?
My name is Amber I am a returning adult student. I will be pursuing a degree as a Speech Language Pathologist Assistant. I was diagnosed with Dysphagia about a year ago and when trying to see an SLP there was a wait to get in after a little research I found out that there is a nationwide shortage and am interested in what are some reasons that this field is not being pursued

Grad school is extremely competitive AND expensive. Our programs are much smaller than our PT and OT counterparts (hopefully someone else can speak to the rationale for this because I’m not sure why); my cohort was 24 people while PT had over 80 students at that time. Also, our assistants (SLPAs) have to go to school for 4 years to work in a limited number of settings and only treating a sliver of the full SLP scope—dysphagia isn’t treatable by an SLPA :(
