How can I go through architecture school not only preparing myself to becoming an architect but also obtaining the skills necessary to becoming an urban planner?

I’m going into Carnegie school of architecture and I don’t know how I can prepare myself even before going into college to not be overwhelmed and have batter grasp of the architecture world. Then beyond that I don’t know how to utilize a college architecture school to the maximum to benefit in me getting the resources during college to also hopefully prepare me enough to pursue urban planning and designing.

Depending on whether you are enrolling in a 5 year Bachelor of Architecture or 3 year Master of Architecture program you will have differing opportunities to take urban planning courses to determine your level of interest. Beyond the academic journey two very different careers await you between architecture and urban planning-clearly the projects are at different scales and working environments within firms may be quite different. You might also distinguish between urban planning and urban design. In addition to coursework initiate a dialogue with practicing professionals in both disciplines and try to determine your interest and suitability for one versus the other. Although Carnegie may offer a dual degree program in architecture and urban planning I would suggest concentrating in either one but not both because a three or even five year program is barely enough time to cover the basics of a well rounded architectural education.
