What are some unexpected challenges that you found when attending a college out of state I will be attending a college 13 hours away, and I want to be as prepared as possible. What are some items you believe are important as a first-time college student living away from home? #Spring26?

Hi Gabriella! Going away for college can be challenging no matter where your school is at and then being far from home can make it feel even harder. But be assured that this experience you're going into is such a great growth opportunity and there will be a lot of people in a similar situation to relate to. Do your best to get to know as many people as you can, stay involved in activities, and talk through any moments you are missing home with someone you trust. You could bring pictures of your friends and family to have in your dorm/space and items that feel like home to help you feel comfortable. Make your new place cozy and somewhere you feel happy!

Hi Gabriella - Going to college out of state can feel scary, but it's also a big adventure. Stay open to new experiences and people you meet. You'll encounter folks who are different from those back home, but everyone has something valuable to share. Change can be tough, but with an open mind, college will shape you in many ways beyond just learning. College is a great time to explore the world. Remember to stay in touch with your family and friends from home; they'll help you feel grounded when things get tough or lonely. You'll find your community in college, and soon it will feel like home.

I also went to college really far away (in a different country than my home!) and in all honestly, I did find it challenging, and I did get homesick a lot. Looking back on it now, what I wish I could have told my younger self is that it's an adventure, it's not a lifetime commitment and you'll learn a lot of cool new things and people that you wouldn't have met otherwise. I found it helpful to hang out with people from a lot of different places and to be transparent with my friends (both near and far) when I was having a hard time. A really tactical tip is to always have your next return trip home planned when you leave--no matter how far away it is--so that you have that to look forward to! Good luck!
