Should I double major if I plan to become a high school teacher?

For college students who are doing a double major, would you recommend it? I want to take Mathematics and Computer Science, but I can't decide between the two. I want to be a high school teacher after college, would double majoring help with that?

A double major, especially with two complementary subjects as you're thinking, would be a great leg up on a teaching job. Additionally, if you get your degree in one or both subjects and then pursue teaching credentials later either through a licensure program or by getting a M. Ed., you would be considered a "Highly Qualified "Teacher" because you have a degree in the subject you teach. This can be a salary negotiating point if you teach in a private school, and a "preferred qualification" for a public school where you are unlikely to do any negotiating on salary, but where the application process is very competitive and you'd want to stand out.

Think of it as a personal investment that enriches your life, even if it's not directly tied to your career. You can definitely double major if those are both subjects you are interested in, but I wouldn't do it if you're not necessarily interested in both of them or if you're only doing it to be a high school teacher. Typically, colleges/universities will have specializations/tracks for these majors. For instance, my university had a "education" track/specialization for the Math major that was recommended for students going into a education role/career after graduation. So I'd ensure to take a track (or individual classes) that are tailored for a career in education to prep yourself best to becoming a teacher. And on top of that, if you are still interested in a different major, that'd be a great reason to double major.
