Of courses, fundamental is a foundation in sciences, like physiology, mechanics, basic biology, etc. Also, you ought to have an interest and skill in physical activity and movement. But what is often underestimated, is the communication and people skills. As you'd be working with injured individuals, athletes under stress, coaches, doctors, and families, a student should work on their clear communication (explaining injuries and exercises simply), empathy and patience, confidence speaking with different age groups, teamwork and professionalism.
While still in school, a motivated student may take health‑science electives if available; stay involved in sports, fitness, or coaching younger students, and volunteer with sports teams, physiotherapists, or school athletics.

This is the most important foundation to build. You should feel confident with:
- Bones, joints, and how they work
- Muscles, including where they start, attach, and what they do
- Ligaments, tendons, and cartilage
- Basic functions of the nervous system
- How tissues heal through inflammation, repair, and remodeling
Athletic therapists use anatomy all the time to assess injuries, ensure safety, and create effective rehab plans.
