What makes an applicant stand out to colleges? #spring26

I've applied to a large selection of colleges, but didn't get accepted into as many as I would've hoped/predicted. #psinrg26

Chantelle’s Answer

Colleges look for strong academics first, but what truly makes an applicant stand out is the full picture of who they are beyond grades. Most selective universities use a holistic admissions process, considering course rigour, sustained academic performance, and intellectual curiosity alongside personal qualities and experiences. Applicants also stand out through meaningful extracurricular involvement, especially when they show depth, leadership, or long‑term commitment rather than a long list of unrelated activities. Colleges value impact—how you used your time, what you built or contributed to, and how you grew—because it signals how you’ll engage in campus life. Just as important is authenticity. Strong personal essays and recommendations that clearly reflect your voice, values, and motivation help admissions officers understand your story and potential contribution to their community. Overall, standout applicants combine solid academics with curiosity, commitment, and character—and present a clear, genuine narrative of who they are and how they’ll add value to the campus.
