When applying for internships, is it best to wait for 1st choice or take whatever you can get?

Getting work experience and internship opportunities during college is really important to me, but this year I was unable to get into my 1st choice of an internship. Should I wait and apply again there next year like they requested, or should I keep applying for other opportunities that I am less excited about and motivated for?

Try asking how long you have to decide on the first offer. Also, check with the one you're really interested in about their decision timeline. Don't give up on what you truly want! You might get another chance after the first internship. The great thing about internships is you can do more than one. They help you find out what you love and want to do for your career.

Hi Quinn,

Your answer lies somewhere in between. Waiting for your first choice can be risky, especially if you're aiming for a popular field. However, don't settle for the first opportunity if it doesn't interest you. It's important to enjoy your work, even in an internship, because you'll be better at it and learn more. If you dislike the work, your results will suffer.

Go ahead and apply for other opportunities besides the one you really want. Gaining experience is better than having none at all. I'm confident that if you make the most of your time now, you'll learn valuable things at these other internships too.

Hi Quinn,

I think the answer depends on what you're trying to get out of an internship! If you need the experience and money let's say, then I would suggest applying for other internships to fulfill those needs. You can always apply to your first choice again next year - and you'll potentially have a new experience on your resume that would enhance your chances!

If your heart is set on your first choice, then ask a recruiter at that company or do some research to see what other internship opportunities exist that could give you experience that your first choice company would find valuable when you decide to apply again in the future.

Wishing you all the best!
