What are the biggest mistakes students make when trying to turn a passion like sports media, writing, or content creation into a real career and what should I be doing now in college to avoid those and stand out early ?
I’m a college student trying to figure out how to turn my interests in sports media, writing, and content creation into a real career. I want to be intentional with my time in college and make choices that will help me stand out after graduation. I’m also working on building better financial habits like saving more and avoiding unnecessary spending so I can invest in opportunities that actually help my future.

Hi Katherine,
One of the biggest mistakes students make is waiting too long to start creating content and gaining experience. To stand out early, start building a portfolio now through blogs, videos, podcasts, or social media related to sports media and writing. Networking and learning skills like editing, communication, and social media management are also very important. It is smart to manage your money well in college so you can invest in opportunities that help your future career. Most importantly, stay consistent and keep improving even if growth feels slow at first.

Build your brand. Identify your values and stick with them.
Learn your critical foundation skills thoroughly before you lean into AI to help you. You WILL absolutely have to know your stuff and use as A tool not The tool in your arsenal.
Explore - take classes that interest you and above all keep an open mind.
For personal finances, Learn as much as you can and consult a pro to help where needed.

One common mistake is thinking you don't need discipline just because you enjoy something. The best thing you can do is focus your career on what you love, making it more fun and exciting. When you learn about something you care about, it feels easier. You've already started, so just stay disciplined, keep learning, and don't give up. Even if progress seems slow, patience and hard work will help you reach your goals. Also, learning about personal finance is really important, and taking courses can teach you a lot.
