What is the most challenging aspect of 1L year in law school? #Spring25

I am more nervous about the social and practical life aspect than the content. I need some advice on going through law school as a new 1L with little to no previous guidance! Thank you!

A good mentor shortens your learning curve dramatically. Look for someone 5 to 10 years ahead of where you want to be and ask for periodic guidance rather than constant advice. Respect their time and come prepared with specific questions.

DENNIS A’s Answer

Hi Cameron: Chill - you'll be fine! Everyone is scarred the 1st year of law school. Law school is a lot of work and a ton of reading. You'll be too busy to worry about social and practical things. Hint, get into a study group as soon as you can. Meet with them every so often - don't wait until the end of the semester because finals come up fast! Make outlines as you go through each class. Your study group - if they are any good - will be with you all through school. So relax - it all works out fine!
Good luck!

Baljit’s Answer

Transitioning from college to law school is a gentle step up. When I started my first year, I realized I needed a plan that balanced social life, work, and studies. Begin by using an electronic calendar to keep track of all your activities. Some people prefer handwritten calendars, and that's fine too. This will help you get organized. Law school involves a lot of reading and analyzing, so staying updated on current events will be useful in tutorials and discussions.

Tom’s Answer

You're quite likely to meet other students who are totally new to the environment and if you band together, you'll be able to go through the transitions and navigate new things together just like experts - because there's strength and wisdom in numbers. Seriously, take heart. You and your mates will probably do better than the experienced students who don't have the same good support system. Good luck! You'll do well. Tom
