TRAVIS’s Answer

It is a good trade and completing it will open the door to other advanced trainings. Each business is different, but most have office type of positions. Customer service or back-end admin roles that require workers to be concise and to produce high-quality work. Dress professionally and be able to listen and communicate clearly. It is a good trade. Additionally, if you complete the basic office admin trade you can qualify for the advanced TCU training. Be sure to maintain good conduct, trade and academic work so you are picked for the advanced training that allows for better job opportunities upon graduation.

While you're in school, consider getting an internship or part-time job to gain valuable experience. Start learning Excel and Word early. Practice writing clear and professional emails. Paying attention to details is very important. Show that you are dependable by always being on time. Get to know the office culture by watching and learning from others. Don't hesitate to ask questions.

Caroline’s Answer

The key to office administration is attention to detail. As an office administrator, you need to anticipate needs so that when work needs to be done, your team has the tools and resources needed to make the work happen, whether it be information, time on the calendar or actual tools. A good way to be prepared is by closely paying attention to what is happening, not so much in the business, but with the actual team you support.

Organization is also very important. You need to be organized, without organization, you will not be efficient.

Christine’s Answer

Office administration can be a very versatile workplace to be part of, especially when you are first starting out. Depending on where you work, you may be responsible for multiple duties such as organizing documents, communicating with customers or coworkers, scheduling, entering information, answering questions, and using different office programs and technology.

As a beginner, you may not know how to do everything right away, and that is completely normal. One of the best traits to have is being eager and curious to learn. Office environments continue to become more innovative as new technology, software, and ways of working are introduced, so being willing to learn and adapt can help you become more confident over time.

I would also recommend developing your communication, organization, time management, and problem-solving skills. Your Office Administration program can give you a good foundation, but your real-life work experience will also teach you a lot as you become familiar with the workplace and take on different responsibilities.

That's a great question! In business administration, it's helpful to get to know Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Understanding the needs of the business and figuring out ways to improve or create new processes are important. We help build the foundation and processes that employees need to do their jobs clearly and effectively.
