Hi Allison,

I'm a tax accountant at Deloitte. I originally started college as a computer science major but switched to accounting halfway through. Although I had good grades in computer science, I found the material difficult and often felt stressed. I was nervous about switching to accounting, fearing it might be just as challenging, but I ended up enjoying it and am glad I chose this path.

If I could advise someone in a similar situation, I'd suggest identifying your strengths. Find subjects or activities you enjoy and that come more naturally to you. Everyone has different talents, so focus on what you're good at. Also, consider the kind of life you want in the future—where you want to live, the salary you aim for, your family plans, and work flexibility.

One benefit of choosing accounting is learning how businesses operate, which could help if I decide to start my own business. Plus, accounting offers a lot of flexibility. If you're not happy with your current role, there are many other opportunities within the field.

I quickly learned that you need to truly enjoy this field because it changes rapidly. Before deciding on this path, I explored social media trends and digital marketing on my own, which showed me how exciting the industry is. My advice to students is to dive in and try it yourself. Create content, follow brands, and explore how social platforms work. If you find it exciting and like keeping up with new trends, marketing can be a rewarding career full of learning and never getting bored.

I'm working as a corporate comm lead for a B2B tech firm. I studied communications studies in university, and part of the course requires a 6 month internship. I chose to work at a PR agency, to learn the ropes firsthand. And I loved my internship, so when I graduated, I looked for another PR agency to join. And somehow I landed in B2B PR, and that's how I'm carving a niche for myself.

Hi Alison. When I was young I thought I will get a career in the areas that I was aware they existed. I never know this job or type of industry exists. So I have tested a lot, learned a lot because I was curious. Than I ended up by chance here, and I really love it. I never know this is something for me... so, my advice to you is... explore, stay curious, experiment and do not get stuck in something that you do not like. Use AI to find out more. Create a prompt with all the things you like to do, all the skills you know you have and ask it to give you a career advice on what kind of roles you should pursue. Then ask it how you end up there.
