Hi Jaynie!
To become a NICU nurse you would need to obtain a high school degree, attend a college or university where you obtain a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing, pass the NCLEX, and then you are on your way to becoming a NICU nurse. While I was in nursing school I worked as a Nursing Assistant in the NICU. This made an easy transition into my role as an RN. Many people push nurses to pursue a med surg position to solidify their nursing knowledge, but the fact is you can just as easily start your nursing career in a NICU if you are truly passionate about it. It definitely will not be the easiest thing to do, but it is possible! In my nursing school, we did not learn much about the Neonate population, and you will not learn it working with adults or healthy babies either, NICU babies are a very different population and you get most of your education while on the job. It is not easy, but I am sure you can do it!

Emily’s Answer

Hi Jaynie! The NICU is an incredible place and although the work can be challenging, it is extremely rewarding. After graduating from nursing school and obtaining your RN license, it is a good idea to gain experience in a less critical setting (new born nursery, pediatric med/surg) where you will perfect your clinical nursing skills. This experience will be extremely helpful in forming a solid foundation to your nursing practice and aid in a smooth transition to the NICU. Working in the NICU requires exceptional critical thinking skills as well as the ability to think on your feet in a fast-paced high-stress environment. NICU nurses are not only confident in their own practice but also team players, it's an exceptional learning environment personally and professionally. I hope this answers your question!
