Ann’s Answer

Hi Fierdeos,

Good question. This is a question I get from students all the time. The answer is that it depends. It really depends on what you ultimately want to do with your degree. A finance degree is great for someone is interested in careers like financial management, hedge fund manager, investment banking, personal and wealth management and financial analyst to name a few. Finance is really the idea of understand that the value of a $1 today is worth less than a $1 tomorrow unless it is properly invested. It is looking what certain financial decision will do in the future. If that is something that interests you, then yes a finance degree is good to have. If you aren't interested in investments or math, then I would recommend other areas of business such as: marketing, advertising, leadership and operations to name a few.

Ann recommends the following next steps:

Search some of the job titles I listed above on O*Net to learn more about them. https://www.onetonline.org/

Finance is definitely a great degree to have for business, but you need to think about what you want to do for your career. Business is broad and there are a lot of different job opportunities that come from different concentrations of business. I would suggest that you study some courses in each different field in order to get a feel for which one best suits you.

Vanessa Marie’s Answer

Hi Fierdeos!

I believe that a Finance Degree is great to have no matter which sector of the business world you enter into, however, I also strongly recommend gaining exposure to all sectors within the industry. Even in a financial services role, sales, marketing, HR (compliance), accounting, etc, are highly prevalent in your day-to-day tasks. Therefore, if you have the time and ability I would recommend adding a marketing or accounting minor in order to make yourself more knowledgeable and marketable to employers. I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck!

Charlie’s Answer

A finance degree is great but I would propose adding accounting and economics. My degree in accounting has served me so well in all aspects of my business experience.
