Ron’s Answer

In addition to the great, comprehensive response from Lanie, I'd add that $$$ is a factor for many entering college - and there is no set relationship between cost or the big name of a psychology college program vs the person who goes to a lesser-known or less expensive state programs. For instance, I knew folks who were brilliant and came out of no big-name State U programs vs. folks who went to Harvard or other big name programs for college. You can get a GREAT education in most state universities ... and usually far more affordable. There are so many academics who need work nowadays that even some Jr College's have great faculty to start with the first years of college for low cost, and then move to a State school.

I was fortunate to go to great programs in private schools for college and grad school, but really in the work world now, nobody really knows or cares what school anyone went to in the past ... it's who YOU are and the quality of work you do that makes the difference.

Lanie’s Answer

Hi Christian,

Great question! There is no real 'best psychology program' out there, but rather great programs for specific concentrations within the field of psychology. For instance, the best school for developmental psychology will probably be different than the best school for clinical psychology. Before you get started looking for a program, think about what part of psychology you want to focus on, and find faculty that are relevant in that field. Those will be the best programs because the faculty drive it to be the best. This is still relevant for undergraduate degrees too, because often you will work in a professor's psychology lab doing an internship to get you experience. This experience will give you a huge leg up in applying to graduate schools, if you choose to go that route.

Lanie recommends the following next steps:

Find out what about Psychology you are interested in
look up professors and researchers in that field
Those are the schools that are best for that program!
