Daniela’s Answer

Hello,

Education is a crucial component to your success as a cosmetologist. Whether you'd like to specialize in hair, makeup, nails, or facial treatments, you need to have the skills necessary for you to legally practice in your state. Training programs typically require a lower time commitment than a traditional undergraduate degree.

Most states require cosmetologists to complete training at a state-licensed cosmetology school. Full-time training programs typically last about 9 months and result in an associate's degree. Cosmetologists who only want nail or makeup training require less training to be legally licensed.

Cosmetology school offers students a mix of technical and business training. Programs include hands-on instruction, with students often practicing on real clients in a school setting. Coursework in cosmetology typically includes:

  • Basic anatomy and physiology

  • Hair shaping and thermal styling

  • Safe hair color techniques and foil highlighting

  • Maintaining client records

  • To some degree, students are able to pick and choose from the courses offered. For example, you may choose to add on instruction in nail - care. Safety and clean-up duties are taught and practiced, and students learn how to operate with confidence in different areas of the salon.

Becoming a great cosmetologist means adapting to changes in the industry. Once you've trained in the cosmetology field, you can only add to your skills. Building a strong client base, keeping your skills current, and racking up years of experience are all ways to advance in the field.

Success in the cosmetology industry doesn't come without hard work and perseverance. Even after you've obtained your license, it takes time to perfect your techniques with different styles and types of hair and skin. A successful cosmetologist has:

  • Good communication skills

  • Business and financial experience

  • Artistic skill and ability

  • Being aware of beauty trends is an important element for excellence in the field. Cosmetologists might attend trade shows, enroll in continuing education classes, or and subscribe to popular style magazines to keep an eye on current styles. With experience, many cosmetologists lease - - booth space in salons, rise to management positions, or open their own salons.

While no cosmetology training program can guarantee a particular career or salary, learning the ropes at in an accredited cosmetology school is typically required for a state license and a job. The first step to becoming a great cosmetologist is to learn the tools and tricks of your trade.

Diana’s Answer

It's a matter of finding a Cosmetology School close by. Call and make an appointment with an advisor at your school of choice.
They will help with grants and where to get loans.
Each state is different. In Illinois it was 9 months full time in order to get amount of hours the state required.

Hi Eriana:

Cosmetologists provide scalp and facial treatments and makeup analysis. Some also clean and style wigs and hairpieces. In addition, most cosmetologists actively recommend professional hair care products or salon hair care products.

Cosmetologists, Barbers, and Hairstylists work mostly in a barbershop or salon, although some work in a spa, hotel, or resort. Some lease booth space from a salon owner. Some manage salons or open their own shop after several years of experience. According to the US Bureau of Labor & Statistics here are some steps on "how to become a cosmetologist". . . .

HOW TO BECOME A COSMETOLOGIST

All states require cosmetologists to be licensed. To qualify for a license, candidates are required to graduate from a state-approved cosmetology program.

■ EDUCATION
A high school diploma or equivalent is required for some positions. In addition, every state requires that barbers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists complete a program in a state-licensed barber or cosmetology school. These programs are mainly found in post-secondary vocational schools and typically lead to a post-secondary non-degree award or certificate. Most of these workers take advanced courses in hair styling or in other personal appearance services to keep up with the latest trends. Those who want to open their own business also may take courses in sales and marketing.

■ LICENSE, CERTIFICATION
Cosmetologists, Barbers, and Hairstylists must obtain a license in order to work. Qualifications for a license vary by state, but generally, a person must fulfill the following criteria:

• Reached a minimum age of 16
• Received a high school diploma or equivalent
• Graduated from a state-licensed barber or cosmetology school

After graduating from a state-approved training program, students take a state licensing exam that includes a written test and, in some cases, a practical test of styling skills or an oral exam.

In many states, cosmetology training may be credited toward a barbering license and vice versa, and a few states combine the two licenses. A fee usually is required to apply for a license, and continuing education units (CEUs) may be required with periodic license renewals.

Some states have reciprocity agreements that allow licensed barbers and cosmetologists to get a license in another state without needing additional formal training or state board testing, but such agreements are not common. Consequently, people who want to work in a particular state should review the laws of that state before entering a training program.

■ PAY
The median hourly wage for cosmetologists, hairdressers, and hairstylists was $13.16 in May 2020. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $9.06, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $25.68. Cosmetologists may receive tips from customers. High quality work and customer service usually contribute to greater tip totals. . . . I wish you much success on your journey. Best of luck to you!
