Google, sounds cliche I know but it really works. Also speak to your school counselors or academic advisors, they can direct you specifically. I’d also say, be open to taking random classes that just sound interesting to you. They might not seem like they align with your career goals, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve worked for one person or the other and find myself referencing stuff from classes I hated in college. There is value in every experience and in everything you’re learning. It may be the very think that sets you apart from everyone else in the room. Which in my experience, always gets you the job.

Mr.’s Answer

It usually comes with the major that you will choose.

You will be given core and electives.

Focus on both but give extra attention to the core courses.

Doing a little research goes a long way! I did prior to joining my college and looked at the curriculum. I made sure the classes I needed would get me where I wanted to be. I would also ask students with experience in that field and Im sure they would be of great first hand advice

If you already know what kind of career you want you are so ahead of the curve! I suggest making great friends with your academic advisers. Your first year or so will be core classes but after that they will help you gear your interest. It is also great to make friends with someone a year above you to get their take on it as well. I got a work study job at the school tutor center and it helped me gear my classes after talking to the upper classmen,

Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Mario -

Planning your course of study for college is always exciting as well as time consuming, but time well spent.

Your first step will be to choose a major subject which you want to get your degree in. Once you have decided your major, apply to colleges that have programs you have targeted after reading about their programs. Colleges list all the required courses that you must take in order to get your degree in a course of study. The college will also provide a list of non-elective or core courses which everyone must take in order to get their degree.

Once you actually choose a program, most likely you will have an appointment with an academic counselor and/or an orientation on site at the school. If there is a course that you feel you may not do well in, you can than ask if there is academic assistance provided or if there are study groups through the campus. Most of what you'll take in your major will most likely be interesting to you. We've all had to take at least one course that we wished we hadn't been required to. You will get through it, however.

By the time you choose a college, are accepted and register for your first semester, you will be firmly aware of what courses you will meet ahead. Colleges and Universities have different courses and requirements, but it will all lead to your personal growth and achieving your degree. Best wishes in your academic planning !

Michelle recommends the following next steps:

Choose a major based on your drive toward something you love.
Read the college's catalog lists of major requirements and learn of which courses you will need to take for your major and courses required for your degree.
Make an appointment with the academic counselor and also for an orientation to the campus.
Inquire about academic assistance and study groups for any courses you feel may be challenging for you.
Have confidence that you will be able to get through the most boring or demanding courses. Organize your time and find a way that suits you best.

Jackie’s Answer

Hello Mario,

Selecting college courses is actually a great way to enjoy why you decided to go to university in the first place! When you start your freshman year orientation, you are allowed to create your own schedule and chose your General Education Courses; for example, if you don't want to take nature writing, but you want to take a course on creative writing then you may do so, and there are plenty of options to go around as well.

Finding a hobby that you enjoy also helps establish wish classes to take; if you like working with computers, Computer Software Engineering courses and even the major itself, or if you want to start your own shoe company than you might want take business courses or major in business finance. Keep in mind even though you get to select your pre-requisites, you will still have mandatory classes to take in order to complete your major but good news is each year of college you get to join classes more about your major which makes for a great college experience.

This does not mean you must declare a major before you join or your first semester! There is time to figure that out with your high school guidance counselor or college advisor to put you one step in the right direction.
