As a Nurse Practioner can you expect something diferent each day ?

I am currently in school to get my certification for CNA. My ultimate goa is become a Nurse Practitioner, I know the steps I need to take to get there. I would like more information about how it is day to day to see if this is actually something I am fit to do as a career.

Richard’s Answer

It varies by field. Many nurse practitioners work in a clinic.

I am a radiologist who works with 5 mid-level providers.
They spend 1/3 of their day evaluating patients for procedures, completing a history and physical on each patient.
The other 2/3 of the day is performing radiology procedures such as:
Barium studies, like upper gi series or barium enema
Ultrasound guided biopsies of thyroid and liver
CT guided biopsies of lung and liver
CT guided drainages of abdominal abscess
Placing central lines, dialysis catheters and PIC lines.

Hi Reyana,

Thank you so much for going into a career that is rewarding, very tough, and one that will continue to be in huge need over the next several decades. There is a critical shortage of nurses across the nation - you have chosen an amazing career path. Congratulations! You are thoughtful in your approach in taking a long look at NP versus CNA or RN. It takes a tremendous amount of commitment, both in time and money to progress your career to a NP. There are definitely specific stressors that come along with being an NP that you should be prepared to experience, but largely depend on the area of medicine you want to practice. NP's are educated and licensed to do many things that medical doctors are able to do and the decisions an NP makes, as well as the delivery of medical care are very impactful on their patients. The day to day rewards of that impact will hopefully outweigh the additional emotional and intellectual stress that you may experience. Certainly the financial rewards for becoming an NP are significant. Good luck to you and make sure to ask a lot of comprehensive questions of your teachers and other professionals in the field before making any decisions.
