Clay’s Answer

I would recommend pursuing an industrial/systems engineering role first. It is a great idea to have a backup plan though.

By getting a systems engineering role, you would be well-versed in different types of engineering so there would be many available jobs post-graduation.

I personally graduated with an industrial and systems engineering degree and had a broad range of applications to use my knowledge in the workforce.

It will be tough and require a lot a lot of determination but it’s absolutely possible to strive for the engineering degree. Good luck!

Nakisha Renee’s Answer

Hi Kailyn, that's awesome to see you have interests in several areas. I personally like to be involved in many pursuits because having just one job title doesn't capture who I am fully. I think you're doing great by listening to what really interests you - it's not too many things to consider right now. Honestly, I would recommend that you take a moment and write down a list of reasons WHY you want to be a systems engineer? WHY do you want to be a singing teacher? Once you identify your reasons why, it will help you figure out if your willing to do what it takes to become those professions.

You don't have to just be one thing in life. For example, you can study and become a systems engineer and then afterwards get a teaching degree and take singing lessons on the side. It all depends on what order you want to pursue these goals. What would give you the most meaning? What would give you the best sense of accomplishment and fulfillment?

Once you know what you want to work on first, go for it. But don't hesitate to revise your plan if you realize it is something you are not as passionate about. What I realized is when I didn't follow my heart about career dreams I've had, then those dreams fester and might turn into longing. So if you want to be a singing teacher, then identify the steps it will take you to do that and start working on it. If you change your mind, that's cool too. You're not stuck in one occupation. Growing up is a process of learning and evolving into more of who you are, it doesn't have an end destination.

Wish you the most success and fulfillment along the way as you ask yourself these pivotal questions!

Nakisha Renee recommends the following next steps:

Write down the reasons why you want to be involved in each career
Rank the reasons based on what is most important to you
Prioritize starting the career that would have the most meaning and fulfillment
Identify the steps you need to take to become that career, and how long it will take you to get there.
Create a timeline of the steps you need to take to reach that career goal, and consider if there might be overlap in between those timelines. For example, while you're studying to become an engineer, can you also take singing lessons?
