Aman’s Answer

As a dentist you diagnose diseases related to oral cavity (mouth). Teeth are important to a person's general health and hence, we try to save teeth by filling them and keeping them clean. But sometimes, teeth can not be saved due to several reasons and in those case we extract or take them out.
There are lot of things that you have to consider before doing dental treatment and hence, a dentist has to learn about medical diseases and influence on dental.
I love working as a dentist cause its not only the disease aspect that we address but also an esthetic (making pretty smile) aspect which always keep things interesting.

Grace’s Answer

Being a dentist is so broad but an exciting and amazing career! If you enjoy art and science, it's the perfect combination. Dentists don't just fix cavities, dentists help completely rebuild the function of the mouth (eating, talking, appearance) as well as the doctor side of things to address issues with disease. If you enjoy a specific area of dentistry you can focus in on one area and specialize - there's oral surgery, periodontics (gums and bone), orthodontics (braces) as an example.

Paymon’s Answer

I believe the two answers thus far have done a great job at answering what dentists do. I want to also point out that dentistry offers a wide range of options as far as the directions you can take your career. First of all, there are various specialties within dentistry that one can choose to pursue. The specialties would allow you to focus and increase your skills in one area of dentistry, and usually earn a higher income as well. There are other options as well, including owning your own dental office or working with another dentist or larger organization, teaching dentistry at a dental school, working in public health to serve and treat those who lack the resources (primarily money) to get proper dental care, along with other options as well. The field is diverse and offers many opportunities for dentists to explore.
