Hi - I visited Cape town in South Africa and thought it was a beautiful country. Music Journalism would require you to not only learn how to produce a great story but how to talk about the different music genre.  Subjects will include journalism of course, writing, editing, design, broadcasting, visual communication, videography, multimedia production, history, law, music,  ethics, and you will also need to keep up with all the music news, maybe you can start by subscribing to AllAfrica or a newsletter like it and write a few articles for them. You also want to start gaining a network in the music business, friends who are artists, producers and radio announcers. Good luck.

Writing courses are always good when you want to be a writer. When you're a critic, you need to think about the audience you are writing for. Another good class to take is music - having a better understanding of music fundamentals and how it's created gives you a better perspective as a writer to understand the different parts, instruments, etc.

Of course, it's good to listen to music of all kinds, from different genres and to go back in time and listen to music of the past to understand how it influences music of the present. It helps you have a better point of reference when you're talking about what music sounds like or how it compares to what's been done before or by other artists.

So you need to have a good understanding of writing - so you can convey your thoughts and descriptions - and you need to have a good understanding of music. You can also try to find a local music blog or newspaper to read others reviews and perhaps become a contributor.
