Definitely! I wanted to teach fourth grade, got a degree and certification in elementary school education and only applied to fourth grade positions. That being said the more flexible you are the more prospects out have, but I love that you know what interests you already!

Elyse H. recommends the following next steps:

Apply to school is necessary and gain experience through volunteering and internships.

Frank’s Answer

Usually Teachers have a grade choice and the school provides the students the teacher is to instruct. The main teacher has some choice for his or her co-teacher and they together work for the benefit of the students and help the students to enjoy the journey and pass all the tests. Think of a teacher like a potters wheel we take in raw lumps of clay and we produce wonderful clay pots ready to go to the next grade with new teachers to practice new learning skills. I love teaching and helping students become successful learners.

Tom’s Answer

Depending on availability, you may have some control over what age group you choose to teach. However, it's critical to remember that you have no control over the students who wind up sitting in front of you each year. A typical career of a classroom teacher may include working with a student who is caught in the middle of their parents bitter divorce, students who have limited English proficiency, a little girl with selective mutism who is hesitant to speak in the classroom, a child who is grieving due to a loss of a beloved family member and those who struggle academically as well as socially. However, it is so important to understand that it is when you are challenged by any of these types of situations that you grow the most as a teacher. Be open to change and adjust your teaching style and you will love having chosen teaching as a career!

Tom recommends the following next steps:

Speak to as many teachers as you can about their own experience.
Take a job as a camp counselor to observe how others handle challenging situations.
Read stories about children who exhibit unique behaviors in the classroom.
