Hi Jemila.

Thanks for your thoughtful question and for sharing about your interest in being an “environmental justice warrior.”

My husband is an Environmental Engineer so I’m sharing a few resources and thoughts you might also want to consider in your search for internships.

Northrop Grumman has internships. Check out this link https://www.northropgrumman.com/careers/Students-Entry-Level/Pages/Internships.aspx

Have you also thought of how technology and innovation can strengthen the work being done in environmental areas? You may also want to check out internship opportunities at https://www.att.jobs/students

And in Chicago, there’s a great non-profit called Alliance for the Great Lakes. They are tireless advocates for our environment and the Great Lakes. I do believe they have summer internship programs. https://greatlakes.org/about/jobs/

As far as timing, there may be even more internship opportunities posted or shared online after the first of the year or closer to Springtime as many companies post internships for summer.

Best wishes to you for success in your career and educational goals.

Melisa recommends the following next steps:

Also consider finding a mentor who is in this field or a job that interests you so you can learn more from them.
You may also want to check out the City of Chicago website for jobs and internships that may fall within your area of interest.

Hannah’s Answer

While not exactly an internship, I would suggest looking in AmeriCorps positions. They offer a variety of positions across the country, including environmental focused positions, that are temporary and great ways to gain experience. The length of their positions vary, from just a couple months to almost a year.
I am currently serving under AmeriCorps Project Conserve with an environmental nonprofit in North Carolina. It has been a great experience so far and has allowed me to further narrow down the type of work I would like to do in the future as well as meet and connect with people in that field. My position mainly involves coordinating volunteer service days, many of which focus on improving underserved comminutes.
If you are interested in Environmental Justice, lots of their positions will allow you to serve and work with underserved communities and through my experience, AmeriCorps has had a big focus on Environmental Justice.
