Ron’s Answer

Being hands on and liking to work on cars are two different categories to me. Having a good mechanic you can trust is going to be the most important thing. There are some repairs that can be DIY ,but recently cars have more electronic aspects . It would be safer to take it to a mechanic , but make sure it's one that you can depend on to be honest with you.

Jessie’s Answer

While being a mechanic isn't my primary occupation, being hands-on and capable of doing most of my automotive repairs has absolutely saved me a ton of money as well as the peace of mind in understanding how and when to fix my car issues.

I currently drive a 10+ year old BMW, which is about the time most major systems start to break down and require heavy repairs. BMW's are notorious for requiring repairs that are more complicated and require removing more components (time intensive) than other vehicles, which ultimately result in a higher repair bill from an ASE certified repair facility due to the extra labor costs. By performing the repair labor myself, I'm able to save the cost of the labor from my maintenance costs.

My Valve Cover Gasket repair:

  • $42 Valve Cover Gasket
  • $30 Valve Cover Bolts
  • $125 / hr labor (6 hours)*

$750 in potential savings on a $822 repair bill.

*This job took me 7 hours the first time vs. the book listed repair time of 6 hours.
