Tammy’s Answer

I have a long career in commercial real estate finance and currently specialize in multifamily real estate. Being in the multifamily real estate finance industry, I have witnessed the shortage of affordable, safe and healthy workforce housing. Several years ago I was asked to provide guidance for third party's performing property inspections and was asked to identify "green" improvements in this guidance. I dug into learning everything I could on healthy housing and the impact to the residents, and particularly children, growing up in some low income housing within our major cities. The long term impact to the health of residents who are exposed to mold, pests, asbestos, and other problematic materials. Studies have shown that there is a disparity in the rate of childhood asthma in the inner-cities.

Not only do green improvements benefit the health of the residents, improving the health of residents living affordable housing reduces families medical expenses providing more money to be applied to food, clothing, and education. Healthy housing, when done properly, will also lower the cost of resident utilities.

I hope this addresses your question on how I became interested in environmental engineering. green-housing; health-housing
