Greetings! A great question! Okay, first of all criminal justice is a little tricky. We have a certain climate right now too. You have to think about your own safety and those of others. I would humbly suggest that you do some "ride alongs" with law enforcement to get a better sense of what they deal with and ask for their opinions as well. Talk to your school counselor too. I will be frank, my husband is a retired sheriff and loved his service to the community. He made lifelong friends with his peers and mentored several others who wanted to turn their lives around. Be sure to get training in self defense and gun/weapon safety...I do know that several folks who go into investigation start out in law enforcement first. I wish the best for you! This is a laudable profession...best, Dr. B

Angela D. recommends the following next steps:

Ride-alongs with police/law enforcement
Talk with your school counselor
Research, research, research!
Be brave!

Donna’s Answer

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that they expect an 8% increase in the demand for Private Investigators between 2018 and 2028. This is in some ways due to increased security/background concerns for corporations. It is definitely a growing industry and valid consideration for interested persons.

I agree that checking with your local law enforcement is a great first step. Many of the departments have summer internship programs that include ride-alongs and giving you insight into their careers. Investigate various organizations like the FBI or Homeland to see when they might have different opportunities to learn more about the work they do. Ask folks in those careers for there thoughts & suggestions.
