Michael’s Answer

Like many jobs compensation will vary by location. I would estimate you are looking in the 40-60k salary range. A test engineer is a good starting position if you lack the education or experience for an entry level computer science position. I would encourage you though to pursue either by education or self learning advancing your computer science skills. This will offer much better compensation in the long run.

From my own experience I started out with a sw engineer job at a defense contractor and 3 yrs into wasn't coding much. I got a job a smaller sw startup as a Software Test Engineer and quickly learned the product and started making code contributions to fix the problems i found during testing. I was then able to join the development team and gain more sw engineering experience.

Mark’s Answer

Depends on experience in the field, I made about 30-34k my first job as a entry level tester. Seems that the new norm is 45-50k for entry level testers.

The software testers at my company are paid hourly, but overall I'd say 50,000 is a good estimate for starting salary pay.

Rosalind’s Answer

It depends on your education and the skills you have, the location, and the company you work for. I would recommend becoming a software engineer or Software developer depending on the school you go to. Most software testers these days are responsible for automated testing and therefore need the development skills. The starting salary for software development/engineer can be anywhere from 40K to 90K.

I have done software testing at different times in my career, I find it's the best way to really understand what your working on and make it easier to then do development. Many people start out as testers then move into development activities.
