Which medical professional spends more time with patients, physicians or nurses?

I am going into my first year of college, and I want to choose a major that reflects my professional goals but I haven't decided between becoming a physician or nurse. #doctor #nurse

Hi Jazmine,

That's a great question! It often depends on your medical specialty. Are you thinking about starting your own practice or joining a clinic or hospital?

Some areas have more patients, and nurses often spend the most time with them. If they work with different doctors, they might see more patients each day.

Have you thought about researching the type of medicine you want to practice? Becoming a physician might take longer because there are more requirements, but the salary is usually higher. I suggest reaching out to your network or seeing if your school has guest speakers in both career paths. They can share how they chose their careers.

Wishing you all the best!

Hello,

It depends on whether it's family practice or hospital. At a family practice, nurses might prep rooms, assist with pre-checks (blood pressure, temperature), before the doctor sees the patient. If a patient is admitted to a hospital, they will be in the hands of nurses the whole time, while the doctor will stop by for rounds and check on the status of the patient and make any adjustments to the treatment.

I hope that helps you with your decision. I'm sure you'll make a fine nurse or doctor. All the best to you. :)
