When you graduate with a teaching degree for kindergarten through high school, you can get a job teaching. An internship is not necessary. If you decide to teach at a college, you usually need a Master's or Doctorate degree. It would help you if you did an internship or something similar while you are pursuing your undergraduate degree. Good Luck on your endeavors.

Great question, Caprice! As someone who has gone through the process, I can tell you it is very helpful to start early. Personally, I became certified after graduating from college, so my experience was a little non-traditional, but still definitely possible. If you're thinking of becoming a teacher while in undergrad, talk to your advisors and professors about it. They will give you specific information about state standards, portfolios, and classes you will have to take. Keep in mind that your license will depend on the subject and grade level you want to teach. For example, being certified in just one subject means taking courses geared towards that and doing a student teaching stint just for that subject. If you want to do more than one, you will need to do more than one student teaching placement (like I did) and a slightly longer portfolio. However, it does make you more marketable, especially when you can choose from more than one credential.

Consider also volunteering (you will need to do observation hours and student teaching eventually), just so you can get an idea of what is involved.

Here are two websites that are useful to find out teaching certification requirements by state:
1) https://www.teach.org/becoming-teacher/teaching-certification
2) http://www.teaching-certification.com/teaching-certification-requirements.html

I hope this helps. Best of luck!
