Is it realistic to go into graphic design and photography to make a living?

I love art and want to incorporate it into my major that I choose in college, but I feel stuck by how much money it makes. At the same time, I dont wanting to do anything that isn't something I love if I'm going to be doing it for the rest of my career. #graphic-design #photographer

Hey Sable,

I felt the exact same way as you did when I was in high school and college, I knew that becoming an artist isn't exactly what you called a career so I decided to pursue many different majors throughout the years. I was into nursing, I made good grades on my classes but my heart wasn't into it then I changed to computer science but could not take douse myself in code everyday and in front of computer all day and night. Then I found my a renew passion in design work. Something I was familiar with, a piece of my artist self rekindle to.

Your passion will become your guidance and money will come either way. Graphic design is always needed in most places in the world. But depending where you live, some cities and countries strive with design jobs than others. Start with simple designing jobs with photography as an addition skill when designing.

Then if you want to make more money, look into UI/UX design, motion graphics, and web design.

Hope this helps.

Follow your heart and your passion and the money will always follow. There are so many dynamic career choices when it comes to graphic design and photography. We as human beings interpret visual images in our brains 60,000 faster than we do text. So our pictures and photos truly tell a story. Your story to be told is through your lens and how you want to contribute to your big beautiful world awaits you.

Sometimes we get locked into thinking of what traditional photography or graphic artists careers are current are there- we need to think differently about this. Imagery is all around us and it is the personalized and professional connections we make with others that we leverage our goal driven life.

Here are some things to think differently about photography and graphic art design as an occupation:

I would say pursue what you love while having realistic expectations about how the job market is. A lot of designers get hired because they have a nich that makes them stand out of a crowd.

Web design, UI design and motion design are all very desired in the marketplace today.

If you love what you do often times you'll put a lot of energy into perfecting your craft. Employers can see the effort you put into something. They look at the final product you deliver and they care about the process in which you got there.

So is it realistic to go into graphic design and photography? Yes. You just got to prove to people by your portfolio you will have that you're passionate about it.

Best of luck!
