Major Advice

I have attended two years of college( I go to MSUM), but right now I'm taking some time off to figure out the right major. I'd like to be in a field that focuses on helping others, but don't really want to be a nurse. I enjoy science, and learning about the brain, and find myself drawn to learning about human nature. I thrive off of helping others, and want to become someone who can assist people from other countries and cultures. I somehow want to combine my passion for science and my love of helping people and other cultures. Otherwise, I was thinking about getting a neurology or neuropsychology degree. So I was wondering if it would be possible for me to get help finding a major for some of the things listed earlier, or if I should pursue neurology(which might not be the best idea because I'm pretty subpar at math). #major

Honestly, you can really help people in most fields - it just depends on what you personally are most drawn to. If you are happy and engaged in what you do, you will have more impact on the work you do for others. That old adage of "you can't take care of others if you don't take care of yourself" does apply in most aspects of life.

My recommendation is to speak with multiple people in a variety of health care roles, as well as look into opportunities to assist in other countries (paid internships, company opportunities, etc.). If you prefer to take a 'behind the scenes' role, such as research development, look for professionals in R&D and lab based positions. Most colleges offer Research positions in their labs or local hospitals/biomedical facilities (4 near my location do). I will also push people to speak to local professionals if you intend to stay in the area you are at, as, while the jobs are similar, the populace and local can really change how the position functions.

If you have more questions or what to speak further, please feel free to reach out.

Have you thought about Respiratory therapy? If you're interested in helping people, why not explore. I loved science and human biology but didn't want to go into nursing either. Most programs are 2 years, there is a high demand currently for Respiratory Therapists and the pay is pretty good. It also allows you to purse other healthcare careers if you're interested and get to experience them on the job. I have seen many co-workers move into jobs after becoming Respiratory Therapists, examples include, Nurses, CNA's, MD's, . PA's. Good luck.

If you're very interested in the environment. You can major in GIS or Geographic Information Science. Their roles range between Environmental Research, GIS Technician, or Geospatial Analytics. You can work in a number of different industries and pick what fits you best.
