If I plan on going to law school after getting my undergrad, should I major in pre-law?

I'm considering a career in either law or business and I want to see if I can do both. #college-major

Law schools don't require a pre-law major! They focus more on your GPA and LSAT score than your specific undergrad coursework. Here's why:

Flexibility: You can major in anything you're interested in, including business! Strong writing and critical thinking skills are valuable, so these can be developed in various majors.
Explore Interests: Majoring in business can be a great foundation if you're interested in business law. But you can also major in something completely different, like English or history.
Focus on a major you enjoy and that will challenge you academically. Good luck!

Hi Sofia,

Great question! One great aspect of law school is that any undergraduate major can work for applying to law school (for law school, you can study whatever you want as an undergrad!). The LSAT, the standardized test that you must take to apply for law school, is a unique test that is not subject specific. The test deals with logical reasoning and reading comprehension but does not necessarily favor any undergraduate major (for example there will not be any questions about the law on the exam). A pre-law major isn't going to better prepare you for the LSAT, though you may find some concepts you are more familiar with once in Law school. I know successful lawyers that have majored in Political Science, Philosophy, Biology, and History as undergrads. With that said, it looks like you have an interest in business as well. A perfectly fine option for you would be to major in Business for your undergraduate studies and then proceed to Law school. If you decide to pursue a legal career, there are many ways to be involved with business as a lawyer, and those options and opportunities can be explored while you are in law school.

Hope this helps!
