Arthur’s Answer

Hi D.A,
could you elaborate a bit? In particular, what exactly are you "unable to understand"? Math is a very general term encompassing a lot of subtopics including geometry, algebra, and calculus, each of which has their own personalities. In addition, are you unable to understand the theory, or how to apply theory to problems?

Hi D.A,

Maths is a very easy subject to learn once you know how to learn it. It can be any topics in maths, all you need is practice.

Compared to other subjects you don't have to read a lot. All you need is to practice on solving different problems. This will make you remember the steps on how to solve it as well as help you improve the speed in solving the problems.

You can create a quick reference note with all the important formulas in Maths. Refer the notes and by-heart the formulas as much as you can.

This will help you improve your Maths subject as well as love the subject.

Simeon’s Answer

Most schools and universities will have a tutoring service available to students. Take advantage of tutoring/mentoring early on if you feel uncertain about your math skills. Don't wait until you are several lessons behind to ask for help. Also, ask your teacher for additional assistance or explanations if you need it. They're all there to help you succeed.

Hi,

1. Start with basic elementary math. Assess whether your basics in these areas are strong - Arithmetic, algebra, number theory and geometry.
2. Start solving problems. Take real examples to get you more involved and visualise the problems. Write each step until you get the answer.
Substitute your answer and check if it is working. Else analyse where you went wrong.
3. If you are comfortable with these, solve complex problems in these areas and then proceed to problems involving more than 1 area.
4. Move to the next difficult areas of maths - calculus, set theory, and statistics. Assess your basics and solve problems of different levels of difficulty.
5. Check if your concepts are clear and you are able to apply these concepts for problem solving. Later solve problems involving multiple areas.
6. Increase your speed. Try to round to the closest number and compute and then trace back. For complex problems, break them into easier subproblems and solve.
7. Most important: Track your mistakes and try not to repeat them. Make notes for all the mistakes you make.
8. Solve problems everyday. Keep track of your progress.

Math like most things gets easier with lots and lots of practice. Math is also accumulative, meaning you have to know the basics before you can go further as higher math is built on the basics. I would suggest get those math for dummies series as they really break down math in an easy way to understand. Go through such math help books making sure you understand everything.

If you are weak in particular math subject, ex:
Division
Algebra I
Algebra II
Precalculus
Calculus
Geometry

Then find problems in books as well as online around these subjects are practice them. Also talk to your teacher about your concerns and set up some extra time after school with her/him to help you understand the concepts you are learning in school and ask for extra problems related to them for you to practice. Find study buddies who are good in math, ask the teacher to let you sit with them and work with them. You can learn a lot through study buddies or those of the same age as their way of explaining will be lot different than the adults.
