What major should I have in order to work for the Center for Disease Control?

I have always liked math and science and think that working at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) would be a good career option for me. Studying diseases and finding cures for them is what I would like to do with my life. #science

Olivia’s Answer

Hi Rebecca!
I would say that it depends on what exactly you want to do within the CDC, though it sounds like you would want to be at the frontlines of research! I would recommend a science-based degree in which you could learn about bacteria, virology, cell biology, immunology, etc. This could be a degree in biological sciences, biochemistry, microbiology, and the like. I am also sure there are classes you could take that would overlap in each subject, so take a look at the course requirements and compare when choosing your major in university (if not lumped under an umbrella subject).
Also, be sure to gain some research experience by working in a lab as an undergraduate assistant or lab technician!

Good luck with your endeavors!

Olivia recommends the following next steps:

Identify exactly what type of job position you want within the CDC
Take a look at the degrees of people who already work at the CDC (try LinkedIn)
Compare course requirements for different life science degrees at our school
