Can someone who starts out as a Mechanical Engineer advance to become a CEO and would they still be able to practice engineering?

My dream is to someday own a company and I would like to know if I could still practice while doing so #jobs

If you believe then it will definitely happen. What's the idea on your company??? Do you have a plan?

Hi Joseph,

Your question is interesting because I think anyone could start a company and become their own "CEO", founder, principal or consultant. It could be a company of 1, 2, 10, etc.

I guess you could approach it several different ways and the main thing you should think about is why do you want to own your own company versus joining an existing company as the CEO (in which case you wouldn't own it per se). Does the idea of starting a company from the ground up excite you? Do you want to grow it into a successful local, national or international company? Do you see yourself coming up with the strategy and business plan and grow the company to a large number of employees? Or do you prefer to keep it small and local?

These are some of the questions you may want to explore to shape your vision and expectations. It would also be helpful to have some experience with management, marketing and consulting as you may need to convince investment backers and banks to help fund your business. It may sound easy and fun to create your own company, and it is a lot of work and very competitive, but certainly the opportunities are out there for someone who is passionate about what they do. The important thing in to have happy customers who can refe contacts in their network to your company.

To become a CEO at an established company typically requires many years of experience, a college education in management from a well regarded university and the domain expertise. It may particularly helpful if you could demonstrate past experience in running your own small company to get hired as a CEO of a larger company. It's up to you to chart your own path. Good luck!
