Rachel’s Answer

I definitely recommend starting internships as soon as possible! I did not prioritize this in college and it made it very difficult for me to find a job out of college. I was competing with top talent who had interned, which was challenging. I would experience as much as you can now, trying different things until you find something you really enjoy.

Samantha’s Answer

I agree that it’s a great idea, but I also acknowledge that it’s difficult to get an internship as a freshman. Another option is to see if there are different professionals who would like to shadow them for a week. When I was a freshman I shadowed a cousin who worked at IBM, and that helped me a lot. Find family members, family friends, alumni from your university in the alumni network, etc. And ask them if you could shadow them at their work, because you are interested about what they do. Most will say yes if possible.

Alexis’s Answer

Absolutely!!! Internships are a great way to explore, learn out viable roles in the market, and build your resume/references. At the very least you may learn what you "don't want" as well. If you're unsure of the type of internship position you want, it may be helpful to start by researching companies in the area that you find interesting/attractive, and then see if/what kind of internship opportunities they have available. Additionally, I would suggest reaching out to the career center at your university. They can help you to assess your career profile and point you in the direction of potential internship sites.

Good Luck!

Wael’s Answer

I am afraid it is going to be very challenging to find a internship without declaring a major. Having said that, you bigger problem is not knowing what you want to do and you are a freshman! You need to figure out what you want to do in life. Do career online career tests and try to shadow professionals.
